Ooly - How to Cross Stitch

how to cross stitch

If you have been inspired to cross stitch but don't know where to begin, follow our guide to help you get started.

what do i need?

If you have bought a kit, it will usually contain everything you need to make the complete kit.

If you are stitching a design from a magazine or chart, you will require:
  • fabric - aida, evenweave or other suitable fabric
  • embroidery scissors - these must be sharp with a fine point
  • a tapestry needle - see our needle size guide for the correct type you need
  • embroidery hoop - this is useful for keeping your fabric taut
  • a comfy chair with plenty of good light

how do i start?

1. If the fabric is not pre-cut, you should cut your fabric to the required size, leaving at least one inch space extra on all edges

2. Fold the fabric in half and then in half again. Where the two folds meet in the middle, this is your centre point

3. Always start your stitching from the central point of the design - usually indicated on the chart

4. Thread your needle with the required number of strands of thread - usually two

5. Find the central cross stitch on the chart and work out its location on your fabric

6. To make your first stitch, bring the needle up at the bottom left hand corner of that square

7. Make sure you hold a small length of thread on the back of the fabric with your finger

8. Take the needle down at the top right hand corner, to make the first half of the X - this should look like a /

9. Then bring the needle back up through the fabric at the bottom right hand corner, and push down through the top right corner

10. You should have made a X shape

11. For large areas, work a row of half cross stitches across then work back along the row, completing the second arms of the crosses

12. When you need to change colours, secure the thread at the back of your work and snip

13. Carry on this way and you will soon have your picture finished!

top stitching tips
  • always stitch with clean hands - snacking and stitching do not mix!
  • good posture and daylight are important for healthy stitching, to prevent eye and neck strain
  • use a highlighter to mark off completed areas on your chart, so you can keep track of where you are

what can i do with my cross stitch picture when it's finished?

Most stitchers prefer to frame their pictures or glue them into aperture cards to send to friends and family

However, there are a range of ways you can display your stitching:
  • coaster
  • bookmark
  • cushion
  • towel
  • t-shirt
  • bag
  • keyring
  • pencil case
  • apron
  • sachet
  • cake trim

...and many more!

can i wash my stitching?

Yes, you can wash your cross stitch if the fabric and threads are colourfast - most major brands will be, but it is worth checking. Ensuring any loose ends are tightly secured, you can gently wash a stitched piece in warm water with a mild detergent or needlework shampoo. Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear then lay flat on a clean towel to dry - do not wring out! To iron, place face down on a soft towel while still damp, and iron on a medium setting.
